Algeria and Brazil may seem like two countries with little in common, but they actually share a history of having faced dictators in their past. In Algeria, the country has grappled with dictators such as Houari Boumediene and Abdelaziz Bouteflika, while in Brazil, dictators like Getúlio Vargas and Emílio Garrastazu Médici have left their mark on the nation.

In Algeria, the era of Houari Boumediene saw an authoritarian regime that lasted from 1965 to 1978. Boumediene's rule was marked by social and economic reforms, but also by harsh crackdowns on dissent and political opposition. Similarly, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who served as President of Algeria from 1999 to 2019, was criticized for his authoritarian tendencies and allegations of corruption, leading to widespread protests and his eventual resignation in the face of popular pressure. Turning our attention to Brazil, the country experienced periods of military dictatorship throughout the 20th century. Getúlio Vargas, who served as both President and dictator, implemented populist policies but also resorted to authoritarian measures to maintain power. Emílio Garrastazu Médici, who led Brazil from 1969 to 1974, presided over a period marked by censorship, political repression, and human rights abuses, earning him a mixed legacy in the country's history. Despite the passing of these dictators, their legacies continue to shape the political landscapes of Algeria and Brazil to this day. Both countries have had to reckon with their authoritarian pasts and work towards building more inclusive and democratic societies. By acknowledging and learning from their histories, Algeria and Brazil can strive towards a future where the voices of their citizens are respected and protected, free from the shadow of dictatorial rule.
